French producer Anthony Collins has come forward as the creative force behind the previously anonymous music project known as Grant. Initially launched under the label The Lauren Bacall, which he co-founded with collaborator Francis Harris, Grant was conceived as a way to produce music discreetly, drawing inspiration from classic Hollywood figures—its name being a nod to Cary Grant.
Since its inception in 2014, the Grant project has amassed a catalog of deep, melodic house music released through various labels, including its own and Lobster Theremin with its offshoot Mörk. The project maintained a veil of mystery until now, as Collins felt it had gained enough traction to reveal his identity.
In an interview, Collins expressed a desire to connect with audiences who would experience his music free from the biases associated with his past discography. He explained that his previous aliases often led to preconceived notions that hindered new listeners from fully appreciating his work. He shared that before starting Grant, he experienced frustration when sending tracks to labels and receiving no feedback, assuming that the stigma attached to his established names played a role in their silence.
Collins reflected on his journey, mentioning that he had composed music for over a decade before finally feeling satisfied with the output under the Grant name, stating it represents a culmination of his various influences. This newfound comfort has also allowed him to explore his creativity without the constraints of industry expectations.
Looking ahead, Collins is set to release a new EP under the Grant moniker in September, which will feature three tracks, alongside another project scheduled for October through a new sub-label from Lobster Theremin. He has also shared a mix of all-original tracks that offer a glimpse into his evolving sound, highlighting his journey to artistry with authenticity and ownership.
