Sky Ferreira Unleashes Independence with New Single "Leash" Tied to A24's *Babygirl*

Sky Ferreira made headlines once again as she prepares to release her latest single, "Leash," tied to the upcoming A24 film Babygirl, directed by Halina Reijn. This marks her first release since she parted ways with Capitol Records in late 2023, and her first independent track following a prolonged period of anticipation for her new album, Masochism.

"Leash" is co-produced by Jorge Elbrecht and is Ferreira's first musical offering since "Don't Forget" in 2022. Reijn reached out to Ferreira regarding a song for Babygirl, a film featuring Nicole Kidman in a provocative role as a CEO entwined in a passionate affair with her intern. Ferreira expressed that the film's exploration of personal destruction and growth resonated with her, revealing a deep connection to the material despite her different circumstances.

Reflecting on her departure from Capitol Records, Ferreira shared her frustrations about how she was informed of her label drop via an automated message sent on the album's tenth anniversary. The timing felt particularly personal to her, given the lack of communication from the label beforehand. Ferreira noted how this dismissal felt like a culmination of a complex and strained relationship with Capitol, which had hindered her ability to release music for an extended period.

The singer revealed that the label's message seemed to imply that even fan-driven campaigns for her freedom were inconsequential—an attempt, in her view, to control her narrative and career. She expressed disappointment over the fact that a decade of her music was tied up in the label's decisions and lamented that her efforts to support her own art often went unrewarded.

While Ferreira is working on recovering some of the music recorded during her time with Capitol, she mentioned it’s proving to be a complicated process. With this new independence, she's eager to assure fans that "Leash" is just the beginning, followed by another track slated for release early next year.

In a candid discussion about her past label experiences, she recounted restrictions placed on her promotional activities, stating she was forbidden from participating in interviews during Don't Forget's launch. This restriction, along with limitations on press photos, felt like a deliberate effort to undermine her visibility and viability as an artist.

As for the much-anticipated Masochism, Ferreira remains hopeful that it will see the light of day, though the complexities of retrieval and rights remain a hurdle. She expressed a mix of liberation from her independent status but also lingering anger about her prior situation.

Additionally, Ferreira shared her experiences in auditioning for a Madonna biopic, which included intensive rehearsals and involvement with the pop icon firsthand. Looking ahead, she also hinted at more live performances scheduled for 2025, building excitement for her evolving career as "Leash" prepares for its debut on December 5, accompanied by a music video.
